Another snap I bought at St. Lawrence Market in Toronto. This looks like Gordie Howe to me, but when I posted this on Flickr no one agreed. Submitted to the Vintage Photos Theme Park in the category "Friends", as a theme about people. This was also the Theme Park's first theme. ========== It's about time I restored this. I believe the Doris Hedine in this photo is the Doris Hedine of Winthrop, MN, who worked overseas for the US Department of Agriculture for many years. About Doris MacArthur I have unfortunately been able to find nothing. The Cataract Hotel is now the Old Cataract Hotel. It has housed many important people over the years, including Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, and François Mitterrand. As people pointed out to me when I posted this before, Agatha Christie may have written Death on the Nile while staying there, and parts of the novel are set in the hotel. Today it looks as if the boulder Doris and Doris were sitting on has been replaced by a concrete pad for sunbeds, as we see at this link: www.ahstatic.com/photos/1666_homom_00_p_1024x768.jpg I bought this photo at the weekly St. Lawrence Market collectibles show in Toronto.

The London (Ontario) Tecumsehs of the International Association for Professional Baseball Players in 1877, the year they won the league's first championship. The team is named for the Shawnee leader Tecumseh, who fought the Americans in Tecumseh's War and the War of 1812, dying at the Battle of the Thames in Ontario. Despite fighting against the Americans, he remains highly regarded by Americans, Canadians, and First Nations/Native Americans alike. Fred Goldsmith, on the far left, is one of three pitchers (the others being Candy Cummings and Phonney Martin) credited with inventing the curveball. Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park weekly theme of Cities. My uncle bought this postcard in 1944. Since Canadian troops had left Iceland in 1941 I don't know why he was there. I suppose if I'd asked he would have had to kill me.The gothic tower in back is part of the Cathedral of Christ the King. The park was then the home of the Cabinet Office, which is now the Prime Minister's Office. The neighbourhood is much changed today. The street on the left with the statue on one side and the octagonal building on the other seems to have been re-aligned, the statue is now pretty much where the octagonal building was, and the octagonal building is across the street.
