Monarchy

Monarchy
I just found out that an old Canadian make of car, the Ford Monarch, was in fact intended as a tribute to THE monarch, the one in England (who is also monarch in right of Canada). So this is my belated tribute to the coronation.

Our current king and his mother, by the way, are the only two monarchs to be crowned as monarchs of Canada. I saw the 1952 coronation on Canadian television -- after each reel of film was developed in England it was flown to Canada on a fighter jet.

Of course, the car's very regal -- look at the lion on the horn honker! And its slogan was "Ride like a king" (it came out in 1946, so George VI was the monarch then).

This is a model from 1961, the last year they were produced. I know I shouldn't have leaned into the car but there you are.

This was taken, by the way, at a Canadian Tire Sunday cruise, a longstanding Canadian tradition. Patriotic or what?

=====

I added a shot of the exterior in the PiP at top left. You will see it has Dagmars. It also has a Continental tire kit on the back.

I do, too, Joe, and the restoration was accomplished. All the best for your week, too.

I got over my laziness and decided to upload a photo of the exterior. I find it quite elegant, except maybe for the Dagmars (named for a buxom, and witty, American TV star). It also has a Continental tire kit on the back.

If you saw the earlier photo I posted of the exterior of a similar car, that was actually another Canadian make, a Ford Meteor. This is the exterior of the car in my photo. And it has Dagmars! And there's a Continental kit on the back!

Well, I think it's safe to say "they don't make "em like this anymore!" What a fantastic shot John.

Did you get the chance to see the Coronation on TV ?
John FitzGerald club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thanks, Keith. I could have streamed the coronation but these days my attention span is very short. I can't even maintain my interest in a hockey game for two hours, and to my mind the (ice) hockey these days is the most exciting it's been in my lifetime. Did you watch it? If you did, what did you think of it?

Yes, we watched the whole thing John........I wasn't really interested in the religious stuff, but found the actual processs fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed the military stuff and the pageantry!

We also watched the Coronation Concert the following day............but it was (for me anyway) all a bit underwhelming!

John FitzGerald club has replied to Keith Burton club
I didn't watch any of the concert, either. Keith, but I did notice the performers seemed to all be either English or American. I wouldn't have minded seeing Kevin Bridges having a go.

I don't know of Kevin Bridges I'm afraid (but I've just finished reading about him on Google).

There's an article here www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2023/05/07/king-charles-coronation-concert-date-times-performers-how-watch that will give you an idea of the performers. You might be surprised :-)

That was quite a show, Keith. And it is appropriate for it to reflect the king's preferences. So I guess he's not keen on Drake. Or Justin Bieber. Céline Dion might be to his taste but she's not performing for a while because of medical problems.

If Canadians had been running the show it would have been different. I remember one Canada Day on which the TV networks showed provincial celebrations one after the other (going from one time zone to the next). Fiddlers, fiddlers, fiddlers. Then more fiddlers.

True, José. The Monarch was typical of the cars of the day -- unsafe and wasteful of gasoline. We forget things like that, though.

HaarFager club has replied to John FitzGerald club
Unsafe!? It had two and a half tons of solid metal with a whole metal frame. In a head-on collision, I'd take a car from the 1950's over any new car of today. Except I'd hate to see a classic like this get dented, ha ha!

I has the lines of the Mercurys of the day. And in fact, Mercury resurrected the "Monarch" name in the mid-1970s and my parents had a Mercury Monarch. I think it was a 1978 model.

Your Monarch is a very beautiful car!

John FitzGerald club has replied to HaarFager club
You've probably noticed, Kenneth, how in period movies and television series you can tell the authentic cars by how far they are parked away from the replicas and how no one is allowed to drive near them. Which is only proper, because they're great sculpture. I grew up in the 50s and still regard the '58 Plymouth fins as breathtaking sculpture. And there were many good-looking cars then.

HaarFager club has replied to John FitzGerald club
I have to agree with you, the 1950s was a good era for car design. I grew up looking at pictures of my Dad's old cars from the 1950s and he had a lot of beauties from that decade.

Designers weren't afraid to be flamboyant then. Their cars had flair.

This is extremely stylish and the reds looks very regal:-)
I prefer this to the actual coronation which passed me by totally. Being in Germany and not owning a TV of course helped in ígnoring it;-)

John FitzGerald club has replied to Gudrun club
I don't have a TV, either, Gudrun. I don't know how many people watched in Canada. Certainly there are many monarchists here, but they seem to be a definite minority. I think the problem is that Canada has so restricted the power of the monarch that they have too little involvement in Canadian affairs to either inspire anyone or make many people think it's imperative to get rid of them.
