Theatre in the alley

Theatre in the alley
A Fringe Festival production being staged in the alley that ran through Honest Ed's department store in Toronto. The name of the production is a bit crude but if you're feeling crudity-proof click the pic to enlarge it and have a look at the sign on the platform.

For some history of Honest Ed's, click the picture in the PiP at upper left.

I don't know why they removed the spinning red-and-yellow globes; they were cool.

kiiti, Ruebenkraut, Phil Sutters, Keith Burton and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

The signs are fun - even that of the pop-up show - but I'd say that the crowd of spectators is underwhelming. Literally one hand clapping?

The performance hadn't started yet, Bob. I saw an interview with a paparazzo once in which he claimed that the crowds at Toronto movie premieres, unlike the crowds in other cities, consisted mainly of people who just happened to be walking by at the time. So once the performance got going the crowd may have built up.

The show does indeed sound worthy of a visit, as does Honest Ed's going by the signs.

There was no place like it, George, and I fear there never will be again.

You see some Canadian style here, Fred. The ruke is as long as you're decent you're dressed well enough.

Ha, ha.............what a fun shot..!!

If "Honest Ed" had been born earlier I suspect he'd have been touring Canada in a horse-drawn carriage selling Snake Oil :-))

In the UK, we're told that (for various reasons including online shops and Corona Virus) our High Streets are dying. Maybe we should take a leaf from Ed's book?

He would have had twelve carriages, three tents, and bevies of beautiful women, Keith; he was quite the showman. I just realized that that's how he ended up owning all the theatres I mentioned under the other photo. From the corner of Bloor and Markham in Toronto to owning the Old Vic. He liked putting on shows. The family business is now mainly theatrical.

Now that you mention it, taking a leaf from Ed's book is a good idea. Do some open-air promotions and get people near the store. Give away stuff. Get people excited. If he were around today he'd probably be giving free hams away to people who had been vaccinated. Bring back pizzazz, I say.

Sounds good to me...............we could all do with a bit of pizzazz I think..!!
