Je découvre ce jour les splendeurs baroques de la Co-Cathédrale Saint-Jean à La Vallette, à Malte (un de mes futurs posts). Y culmine ce chef d'œuvre du Caravage où il montre crûment une scène tragique, comme à son habitude, dans une ténèbre saisissante, celle de la décapitation de St Jean Baptiste.
Contrairement à l'usage, le saint n'est pas présenté la tête dans ses mains transmise à Salomé. Celle-ci, ici, témoigne de sa terreur, se prenant la tête dans les mains.
La signature du peintre, rare dans ses œuvres, est tracée dans le sang même de la victime sainte.

I discovered today the baroque splendours of St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta (one of my future posts). It culminates in this masterpiece by Caravaggio where he crudely shows a tragic scene, in a striking darkness as usual, that of the beheading of St John the Baptist.
Contrary to custom, the saint is not shown with his head in his hands, which is handed over to Salome. Here, Salome shows her terror by holding her head in her hands.
The painter's signature, rare in his works, is drawn in the blood of the holy victim.
