Atwater CA Castle Air Museum C54 (#0037)
A Douglas C54 which is a military variation of the Douglas DC-4, used for hauling cargo or passengers. The C54 played a significant role in the Berlin airlift (see Berlin Tempelhof 2216-2-2 ).

I always liked these. I wish I'd had an opportunity to ride one.

I rode in a 4-engine prop operated between Monterey and LAX by United in 1967. Luckily it developed an exhaust problem and we had to drop down low enough along the coast to turn off the cabin pressure system, so we flew along at just about 4,000 feet with a glorious view. I know it was a DC-something and I don't think DC-7, but I doubt it was a DC-4. My favorite was the Lockheed Electra which Eastern and TTA (Trans-Texas airways, or colloquially known as tree-top airlines) flew -- it somehow seemed more modern.
