Shasta Dam empire plaque (1124)

A plaque erected in 1950 commemorating the 100th anniversary of California into the union. The wording is very reflective of the notion of conquering nature and ignoring the indigenous inhabitants: "To pioneer mothers and fathers of California whose urge to envision what lay beyond the far horizon and whose courage to overcome hardship opened the unknown west, converting wilderness into empire."
