San Pedro and Southwestern Railway 3155a

San Pedro and Southwestern Railway 3155a
This may look odd, but this is the remains of the San Pedro and Southwestern Railway that ran alongside AZ-80 for much of the way from Douglas to a point north east, and then across to El Paso.

I always find it difficult to believe that railroads ran through these remote areas, but then remember that rail was the main form of transportation 100+ years ago, and that the area was much more active in the past than what you see now.

The railway was apparently also known as the El Paso and Southwestern Railroad and as the Arizona and South Eastern Railroad, this route was apparently laid in 1902, from Douglas to El Paso.
