Friday 8 September 2023 (1029) – St. Peter’s Street, St. Albans On the left is Red Eagle Buses Limited 33 (YY15 GDK) on which I had just travelled from Marshalswick as it worked the 1000 trip of St. Albans town service S6. It is an Alexander Dennis (ADL) Enviro200D new to Central Taxis, Felling in May 2015. Standing in front of that is Sullivan Buses E59 (LK08 DXW) taking a break between trips on service 84 which runs to Potters Bar. It is an Alexander Dennis (ADL) Enviro400 bodied Trident that had been new to Metroline (TE884) in July 2008. On the right is Arriva 3940 (LT63 UNP), a Wright Eclipse Urban 2 bodied Volvo B7RLE new in October 2013, working the 0845 service 321 from Maple Cross to Luton.

Red Eagle Buses and Red Rose Travel appear to share the same management and operating centre. The two businesses have their own quite distinctive and quite different livery styles. Both however do feature these same characters on the roofline. In my ignorance I cannot say what the characters say and would welcome help on that point.

Saturday 13 April 2024 (1342) – High Street, Berkhamsted. The lady with the orange shopping bag was making sure the driver of Red Eagle Buses 50111 (WX08 LNP) saw her as he passed by Arriva The Shires 3914 (BV58 MLK) which was already at the bus stop. Red Eagle 50111 is an Alexander Dennis (ADL) Enviro200 bodied Dart new to First Somerset and Avon (44904) in May 2008, which was working the 1255 Chesham-Berkhamsted Circular-Chesham service 354. Arriva The Shires 3914 (BV58 MLK), a Mercedes-Benz Citaro O 530 new in September 2008, seen in High Street, Berkhamsted when working the 1230 service X5 from Aylesbury to Hemel Hempstead. (In a list dated November 2023 this bus was allocated to Aylesbury garage). The ancient market town of Berkhamsted stands close to the Chiltern Hills. The long straight High Street is on an alignment dating from pre-Roman times. William the Conqueror was crowned King of England at Berkhamsted following which a fort and then castle were established. The now ruined castle was a favoured residence of royalty but after its abandonment in 1485 the town fell into decline. In more modern times there was expansion following the construction of the Grand Union Canal and the coming of the main line railway both of which still link London with the Midlands.

Monday 15 April 2024 (1004) – Red Eagle Buses 50122 (YX08 MFO) seen turning from High Street to Pound Lane in Marlow when working the 0926 Marlow (Court Garden)-Little Marlow-Marlow Bottom-Marlow (Court Garden) circular service 160. The background is dominated by All Saints Church and Marlow Bridge The bridge crosses the River Thames, the boundary between Buckinghamshire to Berkshire, and has a width and weight limit which precludes buses from crossing. In the early years when buses were smaller and lighter (1920s/1930s) services did cross the bridge. By the late 1950s Thames Valley Traction operated lightweight Eastern Coachworks bodied Bristol SC4LK buses across the bridge. The weight limit on the bridge at that time was 5 tons and those buses had an unladen weight of just under 4 tons so passengers so had to cross the bridge empty. Passengers had to alight and walk over the bridge re-joining the bus on the other side. The bus is an Alexander Dennis (ADL) Enviro200 bodied Dart new to London United (SDE1) new in July 2008.
