Saturday 29 September 2018 – Delaine Buses 164 (AD68 DBL) was on display at the The Delaine Running Day. A Wright Eclipse 3 bodied Volvo B8RLE that had entered service the previous week (19 Sept I believe). In the background is 140 (AD05 OCT), an East Lancs bodied Volvo B7TL new in March 2005.

Saturday 29 September 2018 (1124) – Delaine Buses Limited hosted a Running Day at their premises in Bourne, Lincolnshire. The company has created its own bus museum as a separate charity, The Delaine Heritage Trust, which is chaired by Anthony Delaine-Smith seen on the right of this photograph snapped from a departing heritage tour. The museum collection is in a purpose built building and, as well as providing covered accommodation for the (currently) five preserved buses, there are numerous artefacts, photographs and records on display that cover the history of the company which had its origins in 1890. Note the engraved stone set in the museum building wall near the latticed window. A closer view of the stone may be seen in the next frame. It reads ‘Delaine 2016’.

The museum collection is in a purpose built building at the garage site in Bourne and, as well as providing covered accommodation for the (currently) five preserved buses, there are numerous artefacts, photographs and records on display that cover the history of the company which had its origins in 1890. This display creates a representation of the ‘boss’s desk’ from the 1950s with various period items. The photograph is of Thomas Arthur Smith and his son Hugh with Ford Model T bus number 1 (PW 1558).

VBT 191, a Yeates Europa bodied AEC Reliance, had been new in May 1958 to Boddy’s Coaches of Bridlington and is now owned by Fowlers Coaches of Holbeach Drove.

DTL 489D, a Willowbrook bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1/2 that had been new to Delaine in February 1966 as fleet number 60. Now privately preserved. Beyond is VBT 191, a Yeates Europa bodied AEC Reliance owned by Fowlers Coaches of Holbeach Drove. It had been new in May 1958 to Boddy’s Coaches of Bridlington.

TBC 164, a Willowbrook bodied Leyland PD3/1 that had been new to Leicester City Transport in July 1958 with fleet number 164. Owned by the Leicester Arts and Museums Services. DTL 489D, a Willowbrook bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1/2 that had been new to Delaine in February 1966 as fleet number 60. Now privately preserved. (To the right is VBT 191, a Yeates Europa bodied AEC Reliance owned by Fowlers Coaches of Holbeach Drove. It had been new in May 1958 to Boddy’s Coaches of Bridlington).

Left to right: In pride of place, was 164 (AD68 DBL), a Wright Eclipse 3 bodied Volvo B8RLE that had only entered service the previous week (19 Sept I believe). Behind it is 140 (AD05 OCT), an East Lancs Vyking bodied Volvo B7TL new in March 2005. Under cover are 130 (X7 OCT), an East Lancs Vyking bodied Volvo B7TL new in December 2000 and 150 (AD61 DBL), a Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B9TL new in September 2011. On the wash bay is KX57 BWD, a Wright Eclipse bodied Volvo B7RLE first registered by Mistral Bus and Coach Sales in January 2008. It was subsequently operated by Jim Stones Coaches of Leigh with registration number JB55 BUS reverting to its original registration after sale.

Left, just behind the wall, was 164 (AD68 DBL), a Wright Eclipse 3 bodied Volvo B8RLE that had only entered service the previous week (19 Sept I believe). On the wash bay is KX57 BWD, a Wright Eclipse bodied Volvo B7RLE first registered by Mistral Bus and Coach Sales in January 2008. It was subsequently operated by Jim Stones Coaches of Leigh with registration number JB55 BUS reverting to its original registration after sale. On the right is 131 (Y8 OCT), an East Lancs Vyking bodied Volvo B7TL new in August 2001. The open fronted building is the drive through fuel bay leading to the rear yard. The two storey building contains the admin offices on the upper floor and driver’s rest room etc on the ground floor.

Saturday 29 September 2018 (1313) - The Delaine Running Day at Bourne, Lincolnshire. Two preserved buses from The Delaine Heritage Trust Collection seen at work on the heritage bus service run between Bourne and Stamford as part of the Running Day. The service operated every 30 minutes from 0920 to 1620. I was on board KTL 780, a Willowbrook bodied Leyland PD2/20 new to Delaine in April 1956 as fleet number 45, which was about to leave for Stamford on the 1320 service. This was the second of three round trips 45 covered (1050, 1320 and 1550 returning from Stamford 40 minutes later). Through the doorway is RCT 3, a Yeates bodied Leyland PD3/1 new to Delaine in July 1960 as fleet number 50, which had just arrived back from Stamford. This was the second of three round trips 50 covered (0920, 1150 and 1420 returning from Stamford 40 minutes later). I was fortunate to travel on both these buses today travelling from Ryhall to Bourne on 50 returning on 45.

Saturday 29 September 2018 - The Delaine Running Day at Bourne, Lincolnshire was themed around vehicles bodied by Yeates of Loughborough. This line up in the yard of the Bourne garage premises features (from right to left): VBT 191, a Yeates Europa bodied AEC Reliance owned by Fowlers Coaches of Holbeach Drove. It had been new in May 1958 to Boddy’s Coaches of Bridlington and has coach seating. MTL 750, a Yeates Europa bodied Leyland Tiger Cub PSUC1/12 owned by the Leicester Arts and Museums Services. It had been new to Delaine in March 1958 and was on loan to the Delaine Heritage Trust. A dual purpose vehicle that was used on either coach work or bus service work. RCT 3, a Yeates bodied Leyland PD3/1 part The Delaine Heritage Trust Collection. New to Delaine in July 1960 as fleet number 50. M1 OCT, an East Lancs bodied Volvo Olympian part The Delaine Heritage Trust Collection. New to Delaine in February 1995 as fleet number 116.

Saturday 29 September 2018 (1108) – Delaine Buses 160 (AD51 DLD) seen at the garage in Spalding Road, Bourne. It is an Alexander ALX400 bodied Volvo B7TL that had been new to Dublin Bus in January 2002 as their AV200 (01-D-10200). The Delaine fleet at this time totalled 29 vehicles comprising 22 double deckers and 7 single deckers. The company has tended to buy new double deckers (20 of the 22 bought new with only 2 secondhand). This bus along with 161 (AD51 DLE) (former Dublin Bus AV201 (01-D-10201) represent the two secondhand examples. Of the single deckers six are secondhand with one bought new in September 2018.
