DSCF2725 Go North East 5296 (NK08 CGY) on the High Level Bridge, Newcastle - 2 Jun 2018

Saturday 2 June 2018 (0924) – Go North East 5296 (NK08 CGY) seen about to cross the High Level Bridge linking Newcastle-upon-Tyne with Gateshead. It is a Mercedes-Benz O 530 Citaro new in April 2008 allocated to Riverside garage in Gateshead for operation on the ‘Citylink’ branded service 57.

The bridge was opened by Queen Victoria in 1849 and carries railway tracks on the upper level which can be seen above right emerging from Newcastle Central Station. The lower level features pedestrian paths either side of a roadway now restricted to use by local buses and taxis travelling southbound only. When constructed the roadway was adequate for two way carriage and cart traffic.
