REMAINS OF THE PAST: the small town of Saint-Sauveur-en-Rue flourished in the Middle Ages, when the Tracol pass (1030 m) was a mandatory passage for merchants. It has long been a crossing point between Forez and Velay and has been used by pilgrims from Santiago de Compostela (Via Gebennensis). St-Sauveur was then on a major axis, called the "Route du Sel" (salt road) which served the entire northern half of Haute-Loire and the north of Ardèche, Drôme and Isère. Some vestiges of the fortifications still remain: a watchtower and the "PORTE DE LA VIALLE" in warhead dating from the 14th or 15th century (symbol of the Benedictine priory created in 1061). The small washhouse is bordered on two sides by the washing stone, fed by a monolithic basin which receives the water supply and acts as a fountain.
