Loch Ness Tranquility

Loch Ness Tranquility
Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extending for approximately 37 kilometres (23 miles) southwest of Inverness. Its surface is 16 metres (52 feet) above sea level. Loch Ness is best known for alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster, also known affectionately as "Nessie". It is connected at the southern end by the River Oich and a section of the Caledonian Canal to Loch Oich. At the northern end there is the Bona Narrows which opens out into Loch Dochfour, which feeds the River Ness and a further section of canal to Inverness, ultimately leading to the North Sea via the Moray Firth. It is one of a series of interconnected, murky bodies of water in Scotland; its water visibility is exceptionally low due to a high peat content in the surrounding soil.

Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch by surface area at 56 km2 (22 sq mi) after Loch Lomond, but due to its great depth, it is the largest by volume in the British Isles. Its deepest point is 230 m (126 fathoms; 755 ft), making it the second deepest loch in Scotland after Loch Morar. A 2016 survey claimed to have discovered a crevice that pushed the depth to 271 m (889 ft) but further research determined it to be a sonar anomaly. It contains more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined, and is the largest body of water in the Great Glen, which runs from Inverness in the north to Fort William in the south.

very impressive atmosphere ... looking forward to seeing Nessie sooner or later, of course!
But I've always thought that she righty prefers peacefully sleeping under these magic waters !1 :-)
Have a lovely weekend Doug!

Hi Doug,

I do like this picture of Loch Ness To me there has always been a special feel to the place, and you have captured it well here, especially the mist rolling off the hills...

Best Wishes

Thanks very much for the visit and kind comments Peter. Yes there seems to be a special atmosphere about the place - perhaps because of the Nessie stories and that she/he might just be below the surface of the water;-))

Very beautiful with the low cloud on the hills. It's not one of my favourite lochs but, looking at this picture, I think I have not appreciated it as I should have.

Your visit and kind words are very welcome Jean. I can only say the lochs that I have been able to visit have a beauty of their own. Loch Lyone is one of my favourites, a quite remote and lonely place: www.ipernity.com/doc/cardiganieuan/43286292

As good a shot of Loch Ness as I have seen Doug! It is a difficult loch to capture successfully and this is a winner! Beautifully atmospheric. Best wishes Carol

Many thanks for your very generous comments Carol, much appreciated. I think the main problem photography wise is the shear size of the loch. For me the clouds and atmosphere are the main attraction in this shot.
