Skye Bridge, Eilean Bàn and Kyleakin Lighthouse

Skye Bridge, Eilean Bàn and Kyleakin Lighthouse
Best enlarged

The Skye Bridge (Scottish Gaelic: Drochaid an Eilein Sgitheanaich) is a road bridge over Loch Alsh, Scotland, connecting the Isle of Skye to the island of Eilean Bàn. The name is also used for the whole Skye Crossing, which further connects Eilean Bàn to the mainland across the Carrich Viaduct. The crossing forms part of the A87. Traditionally, the usual route from the mainland to Skye was the shortest crossing, with a length of around 500 metres (1,640 ft), across the sound between the villages of Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland and Kyleakin on the island's east coast. A ferry service operated from around 1600, run by private operators and latterly by Caledonian MacBrayne. On completion of the bridge in 1995 the ferry service was discontinued.

Eilean Bàn (Scottish Gaelic meaning White Island) is a six acre island that was home to John Lister-Kaye, who wrote his book The White Island about his time there, working for Gavin Maxwell. In 2001 the island had a population of two as recorded by the census but in 2011 there were no "usual residents" living there.

Kyleakin Lighthouse is situated at the south-western end of Eilean Bàn. It was built by David and Thomas Stevenson in 1857, and is linked to a pair of keepers' houses. The lighthouse was automated and converted to use acetylene gas in 1960. Following the start of construction of the Skye Bridge, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1993.

Superb ... how many images though to make this Doug or is it a single shot? :)

Thanks very much Paul, much appreciated. Just the two images, a third one showing the Skye end of the bridge was a poor shot so I was unable to use it unfortunately.

All the best, Doug

Thanks for explaining that Doug. Just thinking then that if you only used 2 images that would suggest you shot them in landscape mode and wondering if that's the case? :)

Yes Paul that is correct. I remember reading somewhere that can be beneficial to use portrait , but I always forget to try that method. I imagine that because more frames are used for a given subject the resulting panorama might be an improvement on one created using landscape. Have you used portrait to create a panorama Paul?

Yes, you're spot on in what you say Doug. It's all to do with the pixels, if you think about it by using portrait shots you're effectively capturing smaller sections of the scene and so when you combine them the detail in the final image is much greater than when using landscape images.

Sadly, there is a downside though and that is the fact that the final image is much larger, but you can always reduce it before uploading and if you ever get it printed out then you will have a superb effect.

With my photostream being reduced now that my Club membership has expired I don't have many on show, but here are 3 panoramas that you can still see ... all shot in portrait mode.

May I add it's not only the pixels but also the fact that you get more "space" and are less in danger of cutting off the tops of hills or buildings when stitching. I know because that used to be my speciality;-)

Fine shot and maybe one I commented on in Pano?
I still miss the ferry. It's true I haven't been back to Skye since the ferry closed (in fact not since 1980!!) but a bridge crossing somehow lessens the sense of magic I used to feel on making the (short) crossing!
Best wishes, Andy

Thanks very much Andy, much appreciate your kind comments. Yes you were kind enough to comment on this on Pano. I must agree that the ferry trip would be more magical than crossing the bridge, but needs must I suppose!

Oh...I wonder how it looked like without this huge bridge Doug!

Thank you for your visit Tanja, much appreciated. I remember seeing it once before the bridge was built and I certainly looked better than today. The bridge is actually quite beautiful, this shot does not do it justice. I wanted a shot that included the lighthouse, island and the bridge so it is a compromise in which the bridge comes off second best I'm afraid.
