Der Kolibrifalter aus dem Süden - The Hummingbird Butterfly from the South

In the picture a hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) is a moth that occurs permanently in the Old World between the 35 and 50 degrees latitude, but in the summer months partly migrates north and then also occurs in Germany (as at the time in August). Because of its conspicuous nectar sucking in flight, this small hawk-moth is also called the "hummingbird butterfly". Recently, it has been observed that swallowtails hibernate here in Germany, most likely a consequence of climate change.
Hummingbird hawk-moths have a very high need for nectar due to their energy-intensive flight.
They therefore suck on red clover and alfalfa, for example, but also on garden and balcony plants such as fuchsias, petunias, buddleja, verbena and phlox. If you want to help this interesting butterfly species, you should grow these plants. By the way, the humminbird hawk-moth in the picture sucks on a verbena!
Even more interesting details can be found in the Wikipedia article above.
The hummingbird hawk-moth in the picture below was photographed today sucking on a Buddleja.
