Eine Schönheit in Weiß - A beauty in white
Gestern fand ich in einem ziemlich dunklen fränkischen Laubmischwald ein größeres Vorkommen dieser eleganten Orchideenart. Es handelt sich um das Weiße Waldvögelein (Cephalanthera damasonium). Die Blühreife bei dieser Orchideenart findet erst im 10. Jahr nach der Samenkeimung statt (!). Es erfolgt Selbstbestäubung. Interessant ist die Ernährung des Weißen Waldvögeleins, siehe Wikipedia-Artikel.

Yesterday I found a larger occurrence of this elegant orchid species in a in a rather dark Franconian mixed deciduous forest. It is the white helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium). The flowering ripeness of this orchid species does not take place until the 10th year (!) after seed germination. It occurs self-pollination. Interesting is the nutrition of the white forest bird, see Wikipedia article.
