Pula, the largest and oldest town in Istria, with a varied history, is today also the tourist and cultural centre of the region, thanks to a good combination of culture from the Roman period, bathing bays and modern tourist facilities, visitors come from all over the world.
Pula is best known for its ancient amphitheatre, the Arena of Pula, the second largest arena in the Roman Empire, built between 27 BC and 68 AC and the sixth largest of its kind.

Arena of Pula
The Arena is the best-preserved ancient building in Croatia. The limestone walls reach a height of almost 30 metres. The theatre is an imposing oval building, measuring 132 by 105 metres. The 72 arches on the two floors, 64 rectangular openings on the upper floor and 15 gates leading to the arena make it a stadium with a capacity of 23,000 spectators.
The amphitheatre was used for gladiatorial games and horse shows. Today it is used for concerts, films and even ice hockey.
