Piemont Tour 2019 Hospiz Grosser Sankt Bernhard

Entrance to the hospice on the Great St. Bernhard The hospice on the Great Saint Bernard is named after Bernard of Aosta, who is said to have founded the hospice around 1050 together with Queen Ermengarde, wife of Rudolf III of Burgundy, to protect travellers at this important Alpine crossing against the Saracens and against bandits. This is also the home of the St. Bernard dog breed, which was bred as rescue dogs for the search for avalanche victims and became famous worldwide, especially through Barry, who is said to have saved the lives of over 40 people.

Piemont Tour 2019 Grosser Sankt Bernhard

A special house: The House of the Dead on the Great St. Bernard Most visitors pass this house carelessly. It is an inconspicuous building. The former entrance at the front is walled up. It is the House of the Dead, where people who died in snowstorms or avalanches were buried as they were found, standing in their clothes, mummified in the cold, dry air. In 1476 the house of the dead was built, the entrance was walled up around 1950.

HFF 2xPiP

HFF, now we can move a little more, which should simulate the so-called Roman bridge which connects the two villages Rorbas and Freienstein. Before 1806 there was a big footbridge over the Töss at the place of the Töss bridge. It was severely damaged by a flood in 1551. It was completely destroyed around 1799 during a military conflict between the Austrians and the French. Between 1806 and 1808 the new Töss bridge was built. Its building material, tufa stone, comes largely from the Freienstein ruins. Renovation took place in 1961 and 1994. Today it is under the protection of the federal government.
