USA - 1986

I visited a symposium in Baton Rouge in 1986 and following I made a roundtrip (alone) over New Orleans, San Francisco, through several National Parks in the West to Phoenix by a rented car, then Chicago, Toronto and New York. All images are scannes slides, taken with a Minolta X700, using mostly Fujichrome100 films. Flying was quite cheap in the US. I had a TWA pass and paid 70 bucks for each dome…  (read more)

Yei Bi Chei and Totem Pole - 1986

26 May 1986 27 12 253
Yei Bi Chei and Totem Pole formation, Monument Valley, Arizona The PiP shows a photo of the trip 10 years later, other light, other film, other colors, may be, the reality is between the two scans. Sometimes it's not easy to achieve the correct colors, if the slides don't contain the right ones. The Totem Pole was first climbed in June 1957 by Bill Feuerer, Jerry Gallwas, Mark Powell and Don Wilson. A second route called "Never Never Land" was climbed in 1979. Parts of the 1975 thriller "The Eiger Sanction" (U.S. director Clint Eastwood) were filmed at Totem Pole. According to author Ron Hogan, in addition to directing and starring in The Eiger Sanction, Clint Eastwood did all his own stunts during the mountain-climbing sequences. Eastwood and his film crew were the last people to climb Monument Valley's Totem Pole. In order to gain permission for the shoot, they had to agree to clear the mountainside of all the pitons from previous climbing expeditions.
