The lake got its name from the crown estate of the Croatian kings, as it belonged to their territory. It was bequeathed to the Order of the Knights Templar in the 12th century, later it was taken over by the Knights of St. John, around 1400 the Venetians took over, and then the Turks came and conquered the dominion.
