Part 3 23th Day - 23.06.2019 Daintree National Park
Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees, also called halophytes, and are adapted to life in harsh coastal conditions. They contain a complex salt filtration system and complex root system to cope with salt water immersion and wave action. They are adapted to the low oxygen conditions of waterlogged mud.

Part 3 23th Day - 23.06.2019 Daintree National Park
Pictures of mangroves have impressed me since childhood. For me, they have become synonymous with adventure in the South Seas. I associate them emotionally with novels by Jack London or Daniel Defoe, to name just two. A lonely island with a castaway without mangroves is not possible.
Today I know that they form a complex ecosystem and contribute greatly to coastal protection. Their destruction also means the destruction of human habitats when tropical storms strike the coast, which no longer have mangroves.
