Lors des parades nuptiales, le mâle est muni d'un extraordinaire bouclier de plume. Le nom anglais du combattant est "ruff" dont le premier sens est "collerette", c'est un nom moins guerrier et montre bien la particularité de cet animal. On l'appelle aussi chevalier combattant.
