die Drachenbäume in Icod auf Teneriffa
Der Drachenbaum (Dracaena draco) wächst zwar baumförmig, bildet also einen Stamm aus, ist aber weder ein Baum noch eine Palme. Er wird bis 20 mtr hoch. Das bekannteste Exemplar ist etwa 600 Jahre alt und steht in Nachbarschaft mit einem zweiten Exemplar in Icos de los Vinos auf der Insel Teneriffa. Den Namen Drachenbaum erhielt die Pflanze, weil abgebrochene Triebe meist erneut austreiben und in einer Verzweigung zwei oder mehr Triebe bilden, ähnlich einem Drachen, dem nach dem Abschlagen eines Kopfes zwei oder mehr neue Köpfe wachsen. In früheren Zeiten hat man aus dem Saft roten Farbstoff hergestellt
