DR070 Gonodontodes dispar

DR070 Gonodontodes dispar
Erebidae, Calpinae - Wingspan: 50mm.

My thanks to Ryan below for suggesting a Genus. It has taken some time to verify this species, but it is very close to a species in the Boldsystems database. As suggested in Ryan's reference book there seems to be a synonym in that book, so I am taking the newer reference on Boldsystems as the current identification, even though the white forewing patterns are not on their reference pictures.

This single individual came to the trap on the 2nd June.

Some countries permit exploitation of its wildlife to foreigners/tourists but here in India you could end up behind bars.

Why did you kill this moth?

Sometimes it is the only way to determine a species for sure, and this is a research specimen. It may be necessary to inspect the underwings in detail, which cannot be seen in a rest position. It is still unidentified, and not in any of the Neotropical lists which I have yet searched.

I would hardly consider keeping a reference specimen for identification "exploitation", particularly when it is used only to further knowledge of species distributions throughout the world and will be donated to the Natural History Museum when finished with. I much prefer live specimens, myself, and have spent many years recording live numbers of moth species for population studies. Sadly, the hotels we stay at in most places regularly spray the grounds with insecticide anyway and often the insects are found dead in the buildings, so are the hotels to be put behind bars as well?. I do not go out specifically to collect species, nor condone people collecting large numbers of a species, and certainly not in Reserves, and am fully aware of protected species.

Here in India we have certain rules known as the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972

Note: Some authors have asserted that G. chionosticta is a synonym of G. dispar.
