Portuguese were in charge of Indian State of Goa until my college days, and I even use to listen the Radio station, which played Indian songs from 9.00 am to 10..00 and the state was well maintained and beautiful just like the days of 19th century. There was no prohibition, Hence the youth often visited to buy liquors freely. My ancestors left the state because they were scared that they will be converted. And we my ancestors and me lived there for more than 150 years, till i life for USA in 1990

The total area under Portuguese control was 1,619 square miles (4,193 sq km). Goa accounted for the bulk of Portuguese India in terms of both territory and population. For judicial purposes, the province of Goa also included Macau in China and Timor in the Malay Archipelago. Portuguese India formed a single administrative province under a governor-general and a single ecclesiastical province subject to the archbishop of Goa, who was also primate of the East.

What I wrote is just little info., not a complaint! I was NOT in Goa, my ancestors, they left Goa and settled in a Southern State, which was a part of India. I hail from that place viz., Karkala

Thank you, Judite, for this information. On the first glance it is obvious that the ECS would create one single Economic zone. But I don't think this is the reason for the portuguese claim. It's my hunch there are other economical reasons like raw materials and perhaps fishery. Has this claim already been accepted?
