Hvítserkur (white shirt) is an eroded basalt plug on the east coast of Vatnsnes peninsula, in an old and long extinct rift zone. The white patches are guano from nesting fulmars and kittiwakes. Legend has it that a troll was caught out by the sun while throwing stones at Þingeyrar church.

View from the pass over Hrafnseyrarheiði back to Arnarfjörður. This is one of the highest road passes (552m) in Iceland which is usually impassable in winter. The new road (still unsurfaced) is an improvement on the dangerous old road which can be seen in the middle of the photo. 34 sculptures by Sigurður Guðmundsson in Gleðivík Bay, Djúpivogur show the eggs of 34 bird species nesting in the area. Recently the Guardian ran an article about Djúpivogur and it's cittaslow status- 3 years after the fact, as Icelandic papers promptly pointed out;-)

Þjóðleikhúsið, the National Theatre of Iceland, was designed by state architect Guðjón Samúelsson. His first designs for the theatre are from 1925 but the official opening was only in 1950, just days before Guðjón's death.

After months of increasing earthquakes and an episode of volcanic tremor on the Reykjanes peninsula a fissure eruption finally has started on the evening of 19.03.21. It is a small one (what Icelanders call a tourist eruption) at Geldingadalur, Fagradalsfjall- somewhere among the hills in the main photo. Geophysicists have analyzed the lava: very primitive olivine rich basalt from a depth of 17-20km, straight from the mantle. It is expected that this eruption will be the start of a decades/ centuries long volcano-tectonic episode on the Reykjanes peninsula- the last one was 800 years ago. Man geht davon aus, dass auf der Reykjanes-Halbinsel eine vullkanisch-tektonische Episode begonnen hat, die (mit Unterbrechungen) Jahrhunderte dauern kann- die letzte Episode war vor 800 Jahren.

Remains of a 14th century Benedictine Abbey which fell into ruin after Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. Whitby Abbey suffered further damage from German shelling in WWI. Jh dänischen Überfällen zum Opfer fiel. Die jetzigen Ruinen gehen auf eine Benediktinerabtei des 14. Jh zurück, die unter Heinrich dem Achten 1538 aufgelöst (geplündert) wurde und verfiel. Im 1.Weltkrieg wurde die Abtei durch Treffer deutscher Schlachtschiffe nochmals schwer beschädigt.
