Tessar
Photographs made with an inexpensive Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f/2.8 lens.
I bought it on a whim simply to try out M42 legacy lenses for fun. I like this lens. It is light in weight and responds well to aperture changes and focussing. I like the long focus throw and close focus ability. In my hand I enjoy its tactile quality. Fidelity seems quite decent and contrast is acceptable. It's a bit slow, of c…

'Developers have coordinated and submitted a planning application proposing a scheme of part conversion, demolition and new build for 30 No. apartments, which overlook the Town Park. The proposals also include storage and landscaping works.'

Leykers was established in 1999. They do coffee; food; passion. It says so on their website so it must be true. I have sampled the coffee and the food; they were OK. So far I have not had the passion.

In the original there were bricks in view, and on reflection I concluded that they were extraneous to the impact of the composition.

Photographed with a Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f/2.8 Tessar lens on a Canon EOS 30D via an adapter, with an extension tube between camera and lens. ISO 800, 1/100th, and the lens close to, if not right on, maximum aperture. That is f/2.8 on the humble Tessar.

Having bought the book in the secondhand bookshop at Lacock Abbey, I felt an unstoppable urge to photograph it under Benjamin Carter's sphinx which is supported by the plinth in the picture.
The book is open at a reproduction of Evelyn Hofer's 'Portrait in Windowlight' photographed in 1969.
Secondhand books are seldom described as 'used' or (worse) 'pre-loved'. I need to analyse why this is so, and whether it means books are held in high or low esteem generally.

Tessar Lens: The Cheap Alternative

Two people walking in step photographed through the classical porch added incongruously to the front of the Georgian building in Corsham housing the Methuen Arms hotel.
I used a Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f/2.8 lens on a Canon EOS 20D. This lens is a Tessar design of just four elements and was a lower cost option to a Pentacon equivalent on a Praktica camera in the 1970s. It was slower of course; f/2.8 compared to the Pentacon's f/1.8. Yet in good light the Carl Zeiss was every bit as good, better maybe. Certainly a sharp lens, and capable of closer focussing than many other standard lenses. I bought mine second hand for £12. I doubt if a lens in good working order and engraved with 'Carl Zeiss' could be found cheaper.

Carl Zeiss Tessar 50mm f/2.8. I dare say pretty much any standard 50mm lens could have provided this result, yet I think it is a triumph for an old simple Tessar. Another oddity is that the Tessar - at least this particular version - feels like a perfect marriage with a Canon EOS 30D.
