Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D Lens
Photographs made with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D lens. The optical design dates back to the manual focus 50mm 1:1.4 AI of 1977.
Far more important than a fast ISO speed is the ability of your lens to gather light.

The 'ROYAL MAIL' legend first appeared on letter boxes in the early 1990s; prior to this letter boxes had the words 'POST OFFICE' cast onto them. The change was prompted by the separation of Post Office Counters Limited and Royal Mail as independent companies.

Post boxes are interesting, but only up to a point. Of themselves they are simply designed and practical containers with a minimum of ornament and a uniform distinctive colour. Where they are can be interesting of course.
Notwithstanding the above, I have nevertheless created an album devoted to my not inconsiderable output of post box pictures. I had no idea until now just how fixated I had become.

I think the 50mm lenses are the best for photographing post boxes. Indeed, they may be the best for photographing any subject.

Nikon D50 and AF-D Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 lens. I was following almost all of my rules of photography: a fast 50mm lens; low ISO; a shutter speed of 1/125th. The clarity, resolution, and detail are noticeably better than most of my stuff. I need to remember this.

Nikon D700 + Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D lens. A slight crop. When I bought my first serious camera - a Zenith EM - it came with a 58mm f/2 Helios lens and I appreciated the longer focal length. I have always gravitated towards a longer-focus lens. Hence the crop. Maybe I should routinely use an 85mm lens.
