Brick Wall in Lower Alma Street

Brick Wall in Lower Alma Street
In England we once used the names of our battles to name newly built streets. It goes without saying that the names of battles we had won were much preferable to the ones we had lost, but according to history, we didn't lose much during that period.
During the Crimean War of 1853–1856, in the Battle of the Alma near the lower reaches of the Alma river, the allied British, French, and Ottoman armies defeated the Russians under Prince Aleksandr Sergeevich Menshikov on 20 September 1854.
This was very useful for the developers of the new street just north of the Paxcroft brook.
The photograph shows a brick wall in the street which I guess dates from around that time. It is a fine and enduring memorial to the artisans then toiling in the area. But it will soon require repointing. Let's hope they use a lime mortar to match the original.
Footnote: English soldiers had scarcely the strength to stand up to fight during this campaign. They were fed bad food, and not enough of it, when they were fed at all. Their health was poor and their accommodation was dreadful. Some reforms were made following this scandal. The English class system was at the root of this disgrace.
