The Express Train

The Express Train
Have you noticed how frequently in period drama the protagonists board an express for London? There is much steam and whistle sounds; the actors sway slightly as the train gathers speed; broadsheet newspapers are opened and tobacco is enjoyed. Then there is an overhead shot as the express travels under a bridge. And you see a single track. The London express trains are operating on a single track. Doh!

Or they will take an overhead shot that reveals that the train has four cars/coaches.

In the matter of trains/aircraft in films, research is sadly lacking. The classic, for me, was an old black and white movie in which the hero boards an overnight train from London to Scotland. Cue a shot of a West Country Pacific speeding through the dark!
