This is an old Cambridge roller. Half of it is concealed by undergrowth: it may have lain here neglected for several years. I gratefully acknowledge help from Jonathan Kington in identifying the type of roller.
Cambridge rollers are made of iron rings. Used after ploughing, they provide a fine tilth and leave small ridges ideal for sowing grass or forage rape seeds, which are subsequently covered over with the right depth of soil by chain harrows.
