Grand Palladian Lodge, Fonthill Bishop

Grand Palladian Lodge, Fonthill Bishop
This is the grand Palladian lodge near the B3089 road at Fonthill Bishop in Wiltshire. It gave access to Fonthill Splendens, a vast Palladian house built between 1755 and 1770. The park was entered through this lodge. Splendens was demolished in 1807 to provide building materials for Fonthill Abbey (Beckford’s Folly) and an enormous wall enclosing the estate. The capital spent, and wasted, at Fonthill over the past 250 years is utterly breathtaking.
