Jeremy has spent every evening since Thanksgiving in a Santa suit at Gimbels. Fabian Bachrach's artistry cost far more than he expected. From the October 14th issue of The New Yorker .

Turn To Sandwiches (9), 1957

One last look at a few of the fun pictures in this volume. Sorry I couldn't post more, but the year's almost over and it's time to move on.

Turn To Sandwiches (8), 1957

We've now moved beyond cuisine and founded a religion or a school of behavioral analysis built entirely on how many of these badges you can acquire/assemble/eat. Nice soothing blue background, though.

Turn To Sandwiches (7), 1957

Let's skip past the pages about breakfast (Applesauce + toast = "Sandwich." Yay.) and about how canned pineapple makes your hot dog a Hawaiian vacation. It's lunchtime. L. I don't get why they're very specific sometimes regarding what to drink at lunch. But here, they just tell you to have a "beverage." Maybe they hoped for "Turn To Sandwiches II" and wanted to save some innovations for later...? R. Proletarian Pete's corner has both the most awkward pose and the best sandwich/snack names. Turn To Sandwiches (5 & 6), 1957

Yeah, I cheated and turned this into a double-page spread, to enhance the cuteness factor. (Originally posted to flickr on February 7th, 2011.)

Turn To Sandwiches (4), 1957

The breads all cluster together like wallflowers at the prom, hoping desperately for the filling of their dreams to come and request just one dance. It's kind of poignant. (Originally posted to flickr on February 7th, 2011.)

Turn To Sandwiches (2 & 3), 1957

L. I think that green mass in the tiny still life can't quite decide whether its a head of lettuce with a manicure or a bunch of seriously under-ripe bananas. R. This promo is almost a novel, so I won't post each and every page. But the Sandwich Principles stirred my heart so strongly! I had to share them with you in their unabridged form.

I opened this magazine-sized, 20-page promo hoping to see a bread fairy. You know, a peppy, aproned sprite with a magic wand, who'd reward hungry but virtuous mortals by turning various inanimate objects into sandwiches. It didn't happen, sadly. Franz Bakery, promoted on the back cover, is still with us. (Originally posted to flickr on February 7th, 2011.)

Braemar Knitwear Ad, 1953

I personally have never appreciated this so-called artist "Michiz" (?), nor their green-skinned alien models who keep beaming down to Earth and seducing OUR men!! >: From the April 1st issue of The New Yorker .

Brimming over with Sodium Cyclamate... so you know it's good for you! (Originally posted to flickr on February 6th, 2011.)

Chicken In The Rough Postcard, 1951

"Copyright 1937 by Beverly Osborne. Super Highway at Gladstone - 1 Mile North of Oregon City, Oregon. 'The World's Most Famous Chicken Dish' - Chicken fried to a golden brown - Served unjointed - without silverware. R.L. Wyrick, Mgr." Sent to Mrs. Elsie Hawbrecker, Route 1, Clear Springs, Maryland by Belle Hart of Rogue River, Oregon: "Long time no hear. Are you still as busy as ever? We have a new grandson since I wrote you last. Do write again." Etsy has several pieces of related ephemera from this chain, which began in 1937 and still has three locations remaining, according to Wikipedia. (Though the Oregon locale isn't among them.) For a short history of the company and its founders, click here . Shown slightly enlarged to show detail.

Lots of Jazz and Blues greats named here. I wonder if they made any money off these tie-ins.

I was never allowed to learn Boogie Woogie at my piano lessons. No wonder I was always bored to death. :D

I didn't clean this one up completely. I wanted to preserve "Holley" at the lower left. Which may have been pre-printed on or added later. I'm not sure. Also, you can faintly see a store imprint at the lower right from Ye Music Shoppe in Sacramento, California, USA. Though I bought this in 2019 from a store on the Oregon Coast, which I hope is still there.

Pan American Airlines Ad, 1952

Part of me basks in this colonial tropic splendor. The other part of me feels terrible for whoever has to clean out that pool after closing time. (Somehow misplaced the source for this. Sorry. It happens. But it's very likely from Sunset .)

"Sparkling Party Recipes" (3), 1950

26 Sep 2021 1 83
A couple more pages from inside the booklet. I'm glad I never heard the fairy tale about bubbling wine as a kid. I would've absolutely tried it with my Mom's pearls and then... [shudder] (Originally posted to flickr on February 8th, 2011.)

"Sparkling Party Recipes" (2), 1950

Some other chapter headings: "Teeners Love A Barn Dance," "Festive Buffet," "Fun At Funny-Face Party," and "Beverages For Beauty." Sadly, most of the pictures don't measure up quality-wise to these amazing titles.
