Cudahy Roast Beef Hash Ad, 1950

Great. More bug-eyed staring inanimate objects, plus the phrase "Push out contents." I think I'm giving up forever on food. :/ From the April issue of Sunset magazine.

Hah! I *told* you all the Moon landing was faked! From Sunset magazine

Baker's Coconut Cut-Up Cakes (7), 1956

12 Feb 2011 1 92
I had no idea there was so much blue candy in the world before I got to this penultimate spread in the booklet. (The last one shows a lackluster pink birthday cake, duly enrobed by at least six bags or cans of the titular product. Not worth it.) (Originally posted to flickr on February 12th, 2011.)

Baker's Coconut Cut-Up Cakes (6), 1956

"...Whether she's a glad witch or a mad witch is up to you!" Either way, she's not half as scary as that unholy goldendoodle-turkey fusion down below. (Originally posted to flickr on February 12th, 2011.)

Baker's Coconut Cut-Up Cakes (5), 1956

The sailboat's cute, but who'd be celebrating the return to school in September? Certainly not the kids. Must be the Moms, since they got no cake back in May. (Originally posted to flickr on February 12th, 2011.)

Baker's Coconut Cut-Up Cakes (4), 1956

I've never once looked at that June cake and thought Crown. It better suggests a plaster three-reel movie projector left by aliens. I think that the eaglet evolved into a butterfly in the Sixties or Seventies version of the Baker's booklet, which suited this configuration much better. (Originally posted to flickr on February 12th, 2011.)

Baker's Coconut Cut-Up Cakes (3), 1956

I've never understood why they decided that the square shape would make a better bunny than the round shape. As for the "Maypole"... Oh, never mind. It could've been much, much worse. (Originally posted to flickr on February 12th, 2011.)

Baker's Coconut Cut-Up Cakes (2), 1956

I don't buy the transition from the un-frosted heart to the completed version. Also, that clown auditioned for a supporting role in Picasso's Guernica , but was rejected for scaring the other applicants. (Originally posted to flickr on February 12th, 2011.)

Baker's Coconut Cut-Up Cakes, 1956

The cute shapes help divert you from the fact that sweetened dried coconut tastes like dusty candle shavings. Front and back cover, plus two pages, of a promotional booklet. Published by General Foods Corporation/Franklin Baker Division, Hoboken, NJ. (Originally posted to flickr on February 12th, 2011.)

Firth Carpet Ad, c1955

Ah, yes. The famous "Dinosaur Hide" carpet pattern, coveted by each and every 1950s homemaker. Probably from House Beautiful magazine.

Ken-L Biskit Dog Food Ad, 1961

The Pyrex Pet Dish fad was short-lived. From the November issue of American Home magazine.

"Such Good Recipes With Fresh Pears," c1960 (2)

13 Feb 2011 1 70
I guess it's good that gelatin is starting to relax its iron grip on U.S. salads at this point. But they're still overthinking it. Just set out some sliced pears with some nice cheese and move on. Yeesh! Slightly enlarged to show detail. (Originally posted to flickr on February 13th, 2011.)

"Such Good Recipes With Fresh Pears," c1960

13 Feb 2011 1 62
An eight-section promotional fold-out published by the Pear Bureau (of Oregon, Washington, and California). It unfolds vertically, with the sections in one long column, but I rearranged it to better accommodate a laptop screen. Slightly enlarged to show detail. (Originally posted to flickr on February 13th, 2011.)

He's got the face of a future serial killer, or Congressman. But I repeat myself. From the March issue of Western Horseman magazine.
