Chicken In The Rough Postcard, 1951

Chicken In The Rough Postcard, 1951
"Copyright 1937 by Beverly Osborne. Super Highway at Gladstone - 1 Mile North of Oregon City, Oregon. 'The World's Most Famous Chicken Dish' - Chicken fried to a golden brown - Served unjointed - without silverware. R.L. Wyrick, Mgr."

Sent to Mrs. Elsie Hawbrecker, Route 1, Clear Springs, Maryland by Belle Hart of Rogue River, Oregon:

"Long time no hear. Are you still as busy as ever? We have a new grandson since I wrote you last. Do write again."

Etsy has several pieces of related ephemera from this chain, which began in 1937 and still has three locations remaining, according to Wikipedia. (Though the Oregon locale isn't among them.)

For a short history of the company and its founders, click here.

Shown slightly enlarged to show detail.

Wow - interesting history of a pair of remarkable entrepreneurs!
And way before all the other food chains who usually get the recognition!
I've actually never heard of this place - perhaps it never too took off in New England.

I first heard about them in the matchbook collectors' retrospective Close Cover Before Striking. Well worth reading, and you can get a better view of that chicken logo than you can on this card. I've never seen one of the restaurants "in the rough," either.
