Brief Encounter 9.1. Breaking the tradition of starting the year (or trying to...) on a cheery note, I hereby present you with the First Rant of 2023! Ta da! It''s a nice, all-purpose generic rant. A sort of DIY Rant-O-Meter. Have fun. Love and anchovy salad. The sneaky quotation is from Eric Fromm’s On Disobedience (Highly recommended reading.)

Dutt Changgle, Paolo Tanino, William Sutherland have particularly liked this photo

Re: the end of civilization. I was speaking to someone recently who is almost 90, and in between taking about the weather and what was for supper and bandages, she said, out of the blue, that she hadn't expect the world to be like this before she died, which was a little morbid but, (or at least I felt), to the point.

Not morbid at all, just clear sighted. It comes with age, sometimes, this clarity. Some time ago I said to my little brother (who agreed with me) that if the world had seemed weird and bizarre and full of nonsense when I was a kid I certainly never expected it to become so hideously fucked up. Ah, well... Entropy, you know. :-)
