The hotel "Arc en Ciel" is located near to the beach and has this fantastic breakfast room from the late 19th century, when wealthy tourists from Paris came to Les Sables-d’Olonne for the summer holidays.

Hundreds of thousends tourists visit La Rochelle over the summer months and they all seem to gather in the old town for dinner in the evening. Dozends of restaurants line up the Rue Sean Jean du Perot. "La Fleur de Sel" is one of these restaurants, where we had a nice, relaxed evening.

The restaurant run by Cornelia Mueller is one of the best in the region. It was closed for renovation for about 8 months - but was reopened just a few days, before we arrived.

During warm long summer nights, the festival "La Fête du Cognac" perfectly combines local food, lovely wines, cognacs (!) and interesting music. Thanks to about 450 volunteers this is a great place to have a good time together with many locals.
"Mottin charentais", a cheese from the area Poitou-Charentes, is served melting hot with honey.

During warm long summer nights, the festival "La Fête du Cognac" perfectly combines local food, lovely wines, cognacs (!) and interesting music. Thanks to about 450 volunteers this is a great place to have a good time together with many locals.
“Cagouilles” in Charente are known as "escargots" elsewhere in France.
The snails (cornu aspersum) here are stuffed with minced meat and slow-cooked with white wine, carrots, garlic, onion, thyme, tomato and a dash of cognac!

The last two years I "steak frites" here. As "real" knives are not allowed for security reasons, I had to cut the meat with a small piece of plywood, that had the form of a knife. I had no success. In 2018 came the solution! The hungry people queue for a "brochette" ("meat skewer"), so there is no knife necessery.
