Eremo di San Salvatore di Lecceto
The hermitage was built here between 1189 and 1223 just eight kilometers from the city of Siena.
The church, known since 1223, was rebuilt in 1317 and enlarged in 1344. Lecceto became a center of reform for the Augustinians, who developed methods to encourage a more faithful exercise of the Augustinian Rule and the Order's Constitutions. At its peak, Lecceto was the monastic home of four of the Order's most distinguished Priors General.
By 1968 the monastery had fallen into disrepair. In that year the Dominican Bishop of Siena decided that he wanted to revive Augustinian spirituality here. He began to restore the monastery. Augustinian nuns came to Germany as early as 1972.
