Schönberg - St. Laurentius
Schönberg was first mentioned in a document in 1219 as Sconenberge. It was the residence of the bishops of Ratzeburg at the beginning of the 14th century.
There was already a church here in 1235. This was extended after 1324. The massive west tower was added in the early 16th century. In 1601, the church burned down due to a major fire and subsequently received a new decoration. In 1831 the tower received its present shape. A restoration of the church took place from 1987 to 1991, during which parts of the painting of the early 17th century could be uncovered.
Since the church was closed, I could not see these frescoes, nor the still existing bronze baptismal font, which was cast in 1357 by Gerhard Kranemann.
