Marast - Prieuré

Marast - Prieuré
The priory was founded in 1117 by Augustinian monks from the Abbey of Chaumousey (80kms north). The church, built between 1120 and 1130, was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but resulting from a local devotion to the Mary Magdalene, the name of the 13th century church became "Sainte-Marie-Madeleine".

Monastic life in Marast endet, when in 1747 the last canon died. The buildings were sold as "National Property" after the Revolution in 1792. Meanwhile the "Amis du Prieuré de Marast" try to save and revitalize the place.

Once the cloister was behind the gate to the left.
