Erwitte - St. Laurentius

Erwitte - St. Laurentius
Erwitte, 30kms west of Paderborn, founded on the "Hellweg" an ancient east-west route, is known since 9th century. 30kms was about a day´s travel, so it is no wonder, that Charlemagne and his successors had a small palace here. The church probably belongs to the group of Laurentius-churches, Otto I built after his victory over the Hungarian armee on St. Laurentius-day 955. The tower of the church has "cousins" in Paderborn and Soest - but here in the small town it seems even bigger.
