Brescia - Duomo

Brescia - Duomo
Seen here are actually two cathedrals.

In the foreground at left is the "Duomo Nuovo". The construction began in 1604. Commission was given to Andrea Palladio. The plague (1630) stopped the work, later financial difficulties slowed it down. The "Duomo Nuovo" was finally completed in 1825, when the dome, designed by Luigi Cagnola, was brought to completion. The dome is 91m high.

Neighbouring (right, and only partly seen) is the "Duomo Vecchio" (aka "La Rotonda"), a large circular structure erected on the site of a prior basilica in the first half of the 11th century.
