St. Peter's Church Thornton

St. Peter's Church Thornton
The 1549 prayer book required the priest to meet the corpse at the churchyard entrance which encouraged the building of Lych Gates to shelter the corpse and the funeral party. Lych is derived from the Old English 'lich' meaning corpse, very few of the Medieval ones survive. More modern ones like this one often incorporate a war memorial, this one contains the names of the nine men of the village who lost their lives in WWI

Marie-claire Gallet, Sonia Roosen, Helena Ferreira, Nouchetdu38 and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

We have a lot of lychgates in this area Peter. Most are Victorian but some very nice newer beautifully made oak ones. I remember being in a lychgate group on Panoramio! This is lovely and thank you also for the information. Have a pleasant Sunday.
