whn - Whitehaven
Folder: WHITEHAVEN
A collection or perhaps a selection of images related to Whitehaven and the surrounding area, presented in a random fashion.
.
.
After a break between March 2020 and April 2023, the latter part largely self-imposed, during the Covid-19 Pandemic, we have re-started regular visits to Whitehaven, and the Miller-Fifer ...
MFL - quiet time
whn - mast wibble
Ripples are distorting the mast's reflection in a most fascinating way. Crop out / zoom in from a larger view of the Old Quay in Whitehaven.
whn - womble
This curious craft is the "Whitehaven Womble" about to head off on another litter collecting sweep around the marina. It is named after the 1970s children's TV characters who lived under Wimbledon Common, and collected stuff to recycle ...
MFL - night
MFL - mizzen stepped
The Mizzen mast has been stepped, rigged and the boom is in place. Just the main mast to go now - which will be when the wind isn't blowing !
The White Building on the skyline was part of the Wellington Pit, and the stone item behind that is the Candlestick.
The quay in the foreground is the "Lime Tongue", which separates the "West Strand" from the rest of the Marina / Harbour.
O&S - buffer stop
whn / wst - stormy December 2015
This is "Storm Eva" hammering the outer harbour at Whitehaven on 23rd December 2015.
whn - old new quay
This short pier, on the west side of the outer harbour at Whitehaven is known as the "Old New Quay". It has an old coastguard (?) lookout at the outer end and the main building houses the local sea cadets.
whn - pier end
The lighthouse on the end of the North Pier, built in 1841. The West Pier light is to the right.
whn - tom hurd rocks
These stumps are the remains of the quarry which provided most of the sandstone for Whitehaven Harbour - the causeway / access was destroyed by storms. Now they make a resting place for the local seabirds - today that includes a cormorant.
whn - seasonal
One of the marina berth-holders had decorations up their main and mizzen masts. Unfortunately the wind didn't approve !
TiG - Shona
"Shona" first arrived in Whitehaven in 1955, late in 2015 her owner Jim McTear passed on at the age 91, but he left her to a close friend. This shot of her on the hard was when she had her anti-fouling redone over the new year, relaunched to her berth a few days later (Jan 2016).
whn - memorial
Memorial plaque to those who left Whitehaven, never to return - presumably lost to shipwreck.
"For those in Peril on the Sea"
whn - walking the quay
Walking along the New Old Quay, don't go to the left of the bollards - the surface slopes and is slippery. Boat just visible is "Saltire" an ex-lifeboat.
Taken late afternoon on a dull day.
O&S / rmf - weathered
Sandstone turret on the New Old Quay at Whitehaven, showing some quite extensive weathering. But having seen some of the recent storms - possibly erosion as well from wave action, despite the height.
whn - nightlights
Looking across the harbour to the town of Whitehaven. For a change, the water was still enough for reflections.
whn - lock channel
The channel to the sea lock is just the far side of the row of four columns / piers.
whn - low tide
The tide is just beginning to flow in again, after the low water time point for the normal spring tides in Whitehaven. This exposed the shoals around the tip of the West Pier. The area just this side of the New Old Quay is being used for repairs to a beached MFV (one of several visits by this trawler)
