whn - Whitehaven
Folder: WHITEHAVEN
A collection or perhaps a selection of images related to Whitehaven and the surrounding area, presented in a random fashion.
.
.
After a break between March 2020 and April 2023, the latter part largely self-imposed, during the Covid-19 Pandemic, we have re-started regular visits to Whitehaven, and the Miller-Fifer ...
TiG - schooner brig
"La Malouine" in Whitehaven. She is square-rigged on the fore-mast and schooner rigged on her main mast.
oaw - jellyfish
This Barrel Jellyfish ( Rhizostoma pulmo ) was one of several gently swimming around the pontoons in Whitehaven Marina, perhaps as much as 18" across ? scale is very difficult !
TiG - Tenacity again
Another view of the "Wave Access Vessel" under development and normally berthed at Whitehaven. More livery has appeared.

olb - Saltire again
This ex-lifeboat is now (2015) berthed at Whitehaven. When I saw - and photographed - her previously; she was at Inverness on the Caledonian Canal.
(ON 802 is a 46' Watson class, was "City of Edinburgh" when stationed at Wick 1938 to 1968, during which time she was launched 133 times and saved 204 lives, (earning a bronze medal in 1942), she then "retired" into the relief fleet until being sold in 1976)
oaw - mullet fry
Just above the rock is a dark patch - which is a gently heaving mass of mullet fry / fingerlings. At least I assume that they are grey mullet, as that is what the adult fish were that I saw previously. Slightly manipulated in attempting to show the fry, try "on black" - the surface refraction is the main difficulty.
BDD - Whitehaven Walkies Wall
Ben exploring the headland. The view from that seat is good, looking across the harbour.
TiG - tenacity contrasted
Tenacity has received some more paint since our visit - but the greater contrast is with "La Malouine" berthed opposite.
MF - Ben waiting
Ben de-dog sitting at the end of the pontoon. Although he walked along there, he really wasn't too happy as he's not used to things that move while floating.
MF - This is MY new berth
TiG - Tenacity
"Tenacity" - Unique "Wave Access Vessel" undergoing trials at Whitehaven (August 2014), developed by Coastal Charters and SB Engineering. She is designed to cope with challenging conditions whilst supporting the offshore wind industry, such as delivering and collecting personnel, in a fuel efficient / green / faster way - even in deteriorating conditions. (Capacity: 12 personnel plus crew)
O&S - Costumed re-enactors
This pair of characters are costumed to represent John Paul Jones and a militiaman from about the time of the American Revolutionary War and the raid on Whitehaven in 1778.
O&S - fish sculpture
O&S - miners
Memorial to the miners of Whitehaven.
[2023] Due to the building of a carbuncle, {sorry - water sports centre} this has been moved a few tens of feet southwards, and the car park in the background has been closed.
O&S - spiked
The figure shows the spiking of a gun. John Paul Jones, during his 1788 raid of Whitehaven intended to disable the defence guns in this way - a standard tactic of the time. (Spiking is driving a soft iron nail into the touchhole of a cannon, thus preventing it being fired. A skilled gunner should be able to remove the spike, but that takes time and the touchhole can be damaged)
gbw - candlestick
The chimney on the cliff is known locally as the candlestick. The tall structure in the marina is the crows nest.
gbw -sparkles
Sunshine sparkling in the marina. A short video would have been better than this still ...
whn - chart
Overlay of Chart onto airborne view.
Note - old photo (before 2014) as the West Strand pontoon layout was altered to finger pontoons in 2015 and the new marina office / facilities block was opened then.
whn / wst - inner splat
Storm "Eva" splattering the inner harbour. If you think that's good, just try the view outside ! But not as bad as other storms - IIRC the one in 2013 did some damage to the structure here, although no boats were harmed. The structure badly hidden by the spray / spume is actually the Sea Cadets building and lookout.
