oaw[rsq] - dropped shells

oaw[rsq] - dropped shells
The red squirrel left some more evidence of his or her afternoon meal ...
some hazel nut shell fragments and the skins from a few peanuts [groundnuts]. There were also a few bits from sunflower seed cases when the area was closely examined.
The pine cone was untouched, although a few were found to have been stripped back to their core and others indicated that the woodpecker[s] have been after the seeds.

We pick up the hard shells as a means to count of where & how many nuts are eaten on visits, and as an attempt to hide feeding evidence from potential predators.

Some red squirrels would be wonderful instead of tree rats

When we first moved here, this was still part of the "Red" territory. After a decade or more, there was something of an invasion by greys. Now, the "Reds" appear to be re-colonising this area, as the invasive greys are being very severely controlled by various means and the habitat should favour the native S. vulgaris, although it is not ideal.

Merci.

Finding these signs help tell us where the squirrels are going, as they are very shy and difficult to spot.

Wow you have red squirrels? Not seen one of those in so long. Plenty of grey ones near me though.

Thanks, Fran.
Yes, It is great to see them again after many years absence.
As well as providing regular food, there's now a nest / shelter box up in the trees.
Hopefully s/he will get somewhat habituated to us.
