clch - UK tree planting
A worrying drop in the decade up to 2010, the recovery from this deficit has been slow and sporadic. In 2020 the planting area was about half what it had been in 1989.
This is in a country [UK as a whole] that is almost deforested compared to what it could be.
Over their lifespan, trees form an important carbon sink.
.
A large section of the English contribution to this process has been in Kielder Forest ... although a significant part of that is replanting after harvesting.

I've made a tiny contribution to the need for planting trees. A couple of decades ago, I planted over 200 trees and shrubs whilst creating a wildwood area to my garden. I was working on the basis that approximately 20% to 30% would succumb to lack of roots at transplanting, poor weather, damage from pests & diseases ...
I've been lucky, perhaps with 10% dying in the past few years. Now I have to thin & prune what that process has left behind. This means that I will have a supply of logs for my wood-burner this winter. Some are already dried, the rest will be stacked and allowed to season [the ash is mixed into the soil conditioner I use].
