nsm - belt-driven saw table

nsm - belt-driven saw table
Large bench circular "rip" saw, driven by belts from overhead line shafts. It was built by Robinson & Son Ltd of Rochdale, England.
Used, as shown in the set-up here, for turning tree trunks into planks, one plank for each pass of the bed past the saw blade.
(Several "faults" with this display :- The blade is very rusty so hasn't been used for a long time, and is far too small for this log, also the guard is placed too far down. Probably never had a riving knife in operational days, compared to modern sawmill practices ...)

Definitely not a traditional table for HTT. [belated : 199 views]

Few people would spot the ‘faults’ there Sara. Credit to you.

Very interesting to see this machine built by Thomas Robinson. My Father-in-Law started work in the Robinson's sawmill when he was just 14 years old and worked there for 34 years.

Also, my Dad worked for them in the Purchasing Office for just a short time prior to his retirement.

Father-in-Law was a craftsman. He once made a pair of double doors to link two rooms at his home using a very unusual hardwood sent to Robinson's from a potential customer in the Far East somewhere. The idea was to test how the machinery could handle the particular type of wood. After the trials the wood somehow managed to find a new home!!

Thank you, David.
Interesting information about Robinsons ... it's nice when you can find this sort of connection to things you've seen.
I have a little competition with myself when visiting museums and so on - to see whether I have something that is on display, and quite often, there is !
