The area of sandstone, known as "Tom Hurd Rocks" supplied a great deal of building grade stone to Whitehaven - both the town and harbour. At low tide there is quite an area exposed, so the original rocks must have been quite extensive. The remains are marked as a "shore hazard to navigation" - the marker is just visible to the far left.
