The area of sandstone, known as "Tom Hurd Rocks" supplied a great deal of building grade stone to Whitehaven - both the town and harbour. At low tide there is quite an area exposed, so the original rocks must have been quite extensive. Some outcrops remain, but appear to have been ignored for some reason, perhaps the quality appeared to be too poor for the intended purpose ?
