Kellett’s en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Kellett vessel was part of the most ambitious of all the Franklin search expeditions, the last throw of the dice by an Admiralty becoming increasing frustrated and disillusioned by the failure of the earlier efforts. It consisted of a squadron of five ships commanded by sir Edward Blecher: the ‘Assistance’; the ‘Pioneer’ steam tender (Lieutenant Sherard Osborn), the ‘Resolute’ (Captain Henry Kellett), the ‘Intrepid’ steam tender (Commander Leopold McClintock) and the depot ship ‘North Star (Commander W.W. Pullen). . . . . His instructions of 10 April 1852 informed him that ‘two great objects will engage your attention’, to discover what had happened to Franklin, and to find McClure and Collinson. . . . . Page 316

Sledging parties also left the ‘Assistance’ and ‘Pioneer’ in Wellington Channel in the Spring of 1853, searching north and west for evidence that Franklin ships might have taken a north and west route after their winter at Beechey Island. Belcher’s sledge journey discovered a channel around the northwest tip of Devon Island which linked with Jones Sound, and raised the possibility that Franklin had broken clear into the northern part of Baffin Bay. Osborn surreptitiously sent Barrow a chart of Belcher’s route, but with the warning, “as you love me [keep] it dark, or Sri E. Will hang me up to a part of theodolite legs. Bleacher’s eagerness to search the east coast of the Wellington Channel for signs of Franklin led in late August to both ships being frozen in fifty miles north of Beechey Island (see plate 23) a predicament that Osborn blamed on Belcher's ‘ignorance of the first rules of navigation in arctic seas’. In September, Osborn protested to Belcher about the wording of an order telling him that ‘there must be no uncertainty in the prosecution of this duty.’ . . . . Page 323 –
